How Long Should I Spend in Europe?

So let's break your trip and expectations down a little bit and we can get to the root of what you really want. Hypothetically, let's say you want to Italy. I would ask you what you wanted to do while you are in Italy? Do you want to see the historic sites in Rome? Do you want to drink wine in the rolling hills of Tuscany? Do you want to ski in the mountains in Livigno? Do you want to see the canals of Venice? There's a good chance you could want to do all of these things...but chances are you won't be able to visit all of these places in one trip.

So perhaps, for our example, if you have a week of travel time, I would recommend combining Venice and Livigno in one trip. Then maybe the next time you travel to Italy for a week, I would recommend Rome and Naples.

As a rule of thumb, you should expect to spend at least 2-4 days in bigger cities and 1-3 days in smaller cities. In my honest opinion, I would recommend more time in a city than less. Unless you are person who likes to be go, go, go (which is fine if you are) I tend to lean towards having down time each day to reflect and relax. Having time to decompress is just as important when you are traveling as it is in your everyday life.

Check out our blog below for an example of how a major city can be done in 3 days.
