Underrated European Attractions

So much of Europe is untouched. So much of Europe is only known by locals. And it is for those reasons you need to explore more than what is on the surface. If we had listened to mainstream media when we visited Austria, we would have never found the restaurant sitting a top of mountain offering views of Austria that you cannot find anywhere else. It is the places that you haven’t heard of that are going to be the most awe-inspiring. Sure, seeing the Colosseum is a must-do, but maybe after seeing that, you check out the lesser known attractions surrounding Rome. Here are the top 5 (in my opinion) underrated attractions in Europe. They are growing in popularity more and more every year, so take advantage of these sooner rather than later. You won’t regret it.

Plitvice National Park, Croatia

73,000 acres of natural beauty. 16 lakes inter-joined by waterfalls, culminating at the entrance to a limestone canyon. Walkways and hiking trails traverse the waters allowing you to be one with nature.

Bran Castle, Romania

Situated atop of a mountain in the center of Romania, Bran Castle was once a prison to Vlad the Impaler. Vlad is widely known as the inspiration for Count Dracula and hence this castle is often referred to as Dracula's Castle. Halloween buffs dream of places like this!

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Connected to mainland Scotland by bridge, Skye is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides region. Known for it's rugged landscapes, medieval castles and fishing villages, this island offers more exploration than you'll know what to do with.

Tivoli Gardens, Denmark

Tivoli Gardens is the second oldest operating amusement park in the world (the oldest is also in Denmark). This park is more than just the rides though. Eclectic buildings and gardens fill the area. In the evenings, the park is lit up resembling a fairy tale. It is said that both Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney used this park as inspiration for their stories.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

This train ride between Zermatt and St Mortiz, Switzerland is said to have the most amazing, panoramic views of the Alps. Although named an express train, this trip actually takes 8 hours but every second of it is worth it. You will pass through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges on this magnificent journey through the Alps.

In addition to these lesser known tourist attractions, try to visit the lesser known cities as well. You'll get to experience a much less mainstream Europe, and I think you'll love it.
